Target for STEM Professions Outpaces Other Occupation Categories

In the dynamic world of Canadian immigration, one must consistently remain updated. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has ushered in a new era within the Express Entry system, reflecting a strategic shift in selecting skilled workers for permanent residency. Yanique Russell Law is committed to providing the most recent developments from the government.

Category-Based Express Entry Draws

The latter part of June witnessed a noteworthy transformation in the methodology of Express Entry draws. The IRCC introduced category-based draws, an approach designed to align with distinct economic objectives. Driven by a steadfast commitment to bolstering Canada's economic prosperity, these draws intend to selectively invite candidates whose skills and experience harmonize with targeted industries.

STEM Professions Shine Bright

Among the most compelling changes in these draws is the heightened focus on attracting professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. According to insights from IRCC, between 28% and 31% of Express Entry invitations issued this year are projected to be extended to individuals with recent involvement in STEM roles, such as software developers and data scientists. While only one round of STEM draw has happened so far, which resulted in 500 candidates being invited, the motive behind this shift is evident. The Canadian government intends on attracting and retaining top-tier talent within these critical sectors.

Diverse Goals, Comprehensive Approach

The category-based framework extends its reach beyond STEM domains. French proficiency targets range from 11% to 15%, healthcare professions occupy 9% to 12%, trades make up 3% to 4%, and transportation and agriculture each comprise 1% to 2% of the allocation. This versatile allocation encapsulates Canada's pledge to nurture a diverse and resilient workforce capable of propelling the nation's advancement.

Understanding Express Entry

Express Entry serves as the portal for skilled workers and tradespeople who aspire to attain permanent residency in Canada. The system manages three central programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) evaluates candidates based on factors like age, education, language proficiency, and work history. The highest-ranking candidates earn Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residency.

Three Facets of Draws

Express Entry draws manifest in three distinct formats:

  1. General Rounds of Invitation: Calling forth candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence.

  2. Program-Specific Rounds of Invitation: Targeting candidates eligible for specific Express Entry programs with elevated CRS scores.

  3. Category-Based Rounds of Invitation: Focusing on candidates eligible for specified categories aligned with IRCC's economic objectives.

A Vision for the Future

The category-based selection draws exemplify IRCC's proactive stance on immigration. These categories are meticulously curated after consultations with stakeholders, labor market forecasts, and collaborations with provinces and territories. With several successful rounds already in motion, this methodology underscores Canada's dedication to welcoming skilled individuals poised to contribute to its progress and advancement.
